I’ve been looking through a few pictures lately and it hit me—Boy, have things changed since the birth of my precious baby boy! Yes, there have been various physical changes (as many Mamas may have already experienced), But there has also been a real struggle with my hair journey! Remember all of the luscious, thick, long hairs that pregnancy was “OH so generous” to give you OR should I say let you borrow? Well, after delivery that all changes. Your hair FALLS OUT & I mean “falls out” A LOT! It may even reach the point of having bald patches OR very thin areas of hair. OMG! Yes, it’s scary, frustrating, and depressing–all at the same time. And this may go on for up to the first year! But if you’re lucky like me, you may have to face this challenge for practically 13 months!! What a nightmare! Now, I’m not sure if anyone else has struggled with this dilemma, but I know firsthand that it’s been “Hella Hard” to make a grand comeback with my hair when it comes to it’s progressive growth and DRASTIC texture change (**Pulls out hair + screams**). UNTIL now! FINALLY, I’ve reached a great stage in my entirely new journey where my hair has been growing better than ever and I can actually see my hair being close to the same texture as it once used to be! YAY!!
And trust me, it wasn’t with the help of all those hair vitamins, fish oil pills, prenatals, and other stuff that they recommend to you when you’re desperately in the need of a Hair Miracle lol. I’ve tried it and it did NOTHING for me! Granted, everyone’s body works differently, so I am by no means suggesting that you not try them. I’m simply saying that it didn’t work for me. BUT you know what did?? TIME! And yes, I understand that time and patience feels like DEATH in and of itself, but honestly, only time solved my postpartum hair issue. The moment that I stopped stressing over my hair (AND starting over [with the big chop] from actually relaxing my hair out of frustration) and consistently used certain natural hair products to keep my hair healthy, that’s when I noticed a change and began seeing progress. And because I’ve always been asked what types of products I use for my natural hair in the past, I figured that I’d write a blog post about the ones I use now, especially throughout my struggles with postpartum hair.
So here’s my hair product list:
- Shea Moisture Strengthen, Grow, & Restore Treatment Masq
- Shea Moisture Strengthen, Grow, & Restore Shampoo♥
- ORS Hair Mayonnaise
- Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback Treatment♥
- Pantene Naturefusion w/ Avocado Oil Conditioner
- Mane ‘n Tail Herbal Gro Shampoo♥
- Mielle Organics Mositurizing Avocado Hair Milk♥
- Mielle Organics White Peony Leave-in Conditioner♥
- Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil♥
- Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding♥
♥=my personal favs!
Now, this list consists of products that I alternate between every few weeks. So if I use my Mielle Organics products this week, then I’d usually switch to my other products for a while after a few weeks, just so that my hair doesn’t get too used to a particular product and it looses it’s effect. I also use a few essential oils in between (i.e. coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, & tea tree oil) which are obviously the MOST natural products you can use!
Just be sure to ALWAYS use a deep conditioner (i.e. Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback Conditioner OR Shea Moisture Strengthen, Grow, & Restore Treatment Masque OR one of your own favs) at least once a week, because it restores the moisture in your hair and that is VERY important when it comes to hair growth.
Anyway, I personally LOVE these products, especially Mielle Organics (which I also use in my baby boy’s hair) because it is truly organic and made with awesome ingredients that actually keep your hair healthy, which in turn produces the best hair growth! But just understand, that everyone’s hair type is different and in turn will need to use different hair products, so what may work for me may not necessarily work for you! It’s all about trial and error!
Yes, I do understand just how expensive and frustrating it can be to walk down this natural hair journey (especially when the products that use to work before baby no longer have the same effects after baby!), BUT be rest assured that you WILL figure it all out and with time and much exposure to different things, you’ll be able to feel & be better than ever! Women are strong and that’s why we were designed to go through ALL of the stuff we have to push through—-Motherhood being one of them! Just embrace all the changes (both Good/Bad) and know that the NEW you has the potential to be the BEST you! You just have to learn how to and what things need to be substituted in order to create your best canvas.
This is your new journey and another thing to add to your story. Continue to write your story with pride. Cheers to all you Mamas doing your thing! Our struggles will soon turn out to be our victories and testaments of just how AWESOME we are!
Let these changes show the world just how much you are a Queen! And keep “Queening” your way through this journey after baby! Our babies are the greatest gifts.
