When it comes to breakfast or brunch, this Southern Caprese Biscuit Breakfast Strata is one evolutionary dish. Based with soft, fluffy Southern-style biscuits that comes nestled in between mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, roasted tomatoes, and a creamy well-seasoned egg mixture, this breakfast strata is the perfect family breakfast or brunch meal on any given day. Gluten-Free, Overnight + Make Ahead options.

This Southern Caprese Biscuit Breakfast Strata has been something that I've absolutely fallen in love with. Much like a traditional casserole, this Strata is the ultimate comfort food dish for any time of day, honestly!

While it is intended for breakfast or brunch, you can change things up a bit for the entire family by eating this as a weeknight meal for dinner. So versatile and the savory flavor is dynamite.

But the other awesome thing about this dish is that you can make it overnight or ahead of time, which can be such a lifesaver if you're super busy or just don't have the time. I mean, who doesn't love a good make ahead dish?

What is a Breakfast Strata, Anyway?

OK, so if you aren't aware of what a strata is, then let me break it down. A strata is basically a layered casserole dish that consists of the following elements: bread, egg, + cheese. Like many casseroles, you can always add your variation of favorite ingredients to create a new flavor and experience with each dish. That simple, ya'll.

What Type of Bread Can I Use?

When it comes to the bread base of a strata, there are SO many options. For this dish, I wanted to keep things simple with store-bought biscuits, however, you can chose to make your biscuits from scratch and add them in.

Speaking of making your own biscuits, I highly recommend trying this Homemade Buttermilk Biscuit recipe by Sally's Baking Addiction! Just incredible.

In addition, I love the idea of switching things up to create a new delicious bite, therefore, I'd recommend using either brioche bread, croissants, or even bagels. It's truly up to to you and it depends on what you're feeling in the mood for.

How to Make this Overnight or Ahead of Time.

Like I said previously, the best part about this dish is that you can make it overnight or ahead of time. Think about it----imagine being able to make this the day before Christmas in the midst of all of the preparation for the big day of family festivities and just keeping it in the fridge and then taking it out the day of and baking it, slicing it, and enjoying? Whelp, it's just that easy!

To do this, you'll literally follow all of the assembly steps and instead of adding it to oven to bake, you'll simply wrap your baking dish well and refrigerate overnight or for at least 8 hours before removing it the next day and letting it sit at room temp for 20 minutes or so and then baking it. Wallah!

What Other Ingredients Can I Add to this Breakfast Strata?

The thing about most of my recipes is that I like to give some option to change things up for your best preference. With that being said, the same goes for the ingredients that can be used in this breakfast strata.

While this recipe calls for parmesan, mozzarella, and tomatoes as the star ingredients, you can also create more savoriness by adding bacon, kale, spinach, chicken, or other cheeses if your heart desires. It's truly up to you!

PERFECTLY ROASTED TOMATOES

Knowing how to roast all vegetables (in general) perfectly is definitely a learned skill. All veggies are different and they all have vast cooking times.

The most common rule of thumb is to roast thicker vegetables at a higher temperature because they can handle the heat. For example, potatoes or sweet potatoes can roast at a higher temp because of their thickness. Broccoli (like tomatoes), on the other hand, lends well to a lower heat when cut into florets.

INGREDIENTS

  • Tomatoes. You can add as many tomatoes as will fit on your baking sheet.
  • Olive oil. Don’t skimp on the oil! It helps concentrate the tomato flavor and makes a nice jammy texture. You can use these roasted tomatoes like a dressing or sauce.
  • Dried herbs. I like a mixture of Italian herbs like oregano, basil and parsley. But you can mix up the seasonings with other fresh or dried herbs. Thyme, rosemary, marjoram and tarragon are all delicious with tomatoes.
  • Spices. Likewise, feel free to play with different spices in your roasted tomatoes. I like paprika, garlic powder and a pinch of red pepper flakes for a slight kick.

What You’ll Need For This Strata?

Biscuits – Whether store-bought or homemade, this is the best part of it all! Creates the best base and soaks in all the flavor

Mozzarella Cheese – Makes things nice + creamy; plus, adds such rich cheesy flavor

Parmesan Cheese – Makes things rich in cheese flavor in addition to mozzarella

Herbs + Seasonings – A great addition of flavor. Adds such savoriness nice + a beautiful kick of spice

Roasted tomatoes – Adds a nice kick of flavor and great texture to the dish.

Almond milk – Adds a fluffy texture. You can also use whole milk if preferred.

Eggs – The thing that creates the custard and holds it all together

Southern Caprese Biscuit Breakfast Strata

Serves: 8 servings

Ingredients

STRATA:

  • 1 (16 oz.) can organic biscuits, store-bought or homemade (For homemade biscuits, that's about 6-8!)
  • 2 cups Almond milk, at room temp. (You can also use Whole Milk, if desired!)
  • 10 large organic eggs, at room temp.
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon organic brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 2 cups organic Mozarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese

ROASTED HERB TOMATOES:

  • 2 cups Herb Roasted Tomatoes

Instructions

  • To start, simply lightly grease a medium baking dish (9 x 13″) with butter or cooking spray and pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

ROAST THE TOMATOES:

  • To roast the tomatoes, see recipe. Roasting takes about 10-15 minutes.

PREPARE THE BATTER:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and herbs + seasonings (salt, black pepper, garlic powder, parsley, oregano, basil, smoked paprika, and brown sugar. Stir in the grated parmesan. Set aside.

PREPARE THE BISCUITS:

  • If using store-bought biscuits, remove from can and cut each biscuit dough into 4 triangular pieces until all pieces are cut.

ASSEMBLY:

  • Add your biscuits pieces into the baking dish and spread around evenly then pour the batter mixture atop pieces. NOTE: It's OK if biscuits float to the top at this point.
  • Next, add the following a top the bread: egg mixture, mozzarella cheese shreds, and roasted tomatoes. For an extra layer, you can add additional cheese, if desired.
  • Bake the strata for 20 minutes (while loosely covering with foil), then remove foil and continue baking for the remaining 25 minutes or until edges are golden brown (or slightly dark brown, if preferred) and the center is set.
  • Remove from oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
  • Bon Appetit!

Tips & Tricks

  • STORAGE: Any leftovers can be kept in a tightly sealed container and refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Baked strata can be frozen for up to 2 months. Simply thaw out in the refrigerator overnight before leaving it at room temp. for 30 minutes and then heating in the oven.
  • OVERNIGHT + MAKE AHEAD: To do this, you'll literally follow all of the assembly steps and instead of adding it to oven to bake, you'll simply wrap your baking dish well and refrigerate overnight or for at least 8 hours before removing it the next day and letting it sit at room temp for 20 minutes or so and then baking it. Wallah!
  • ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: While this recipe calls for parmesan, mozzarella, and tomatoes as the star ingredients, you can also create more savoriness by adding bacon, kale, spinach, chicken, or other cheeses if your heart desires. It's truly up to you!

  1. This was really delicious. I added in two thinly sliced green onions and it added such good flavor. I put some biscuits on the bottom and some on the top and it was perfect. Will definitely make again.

  2. I'm new at this and have a quick question about the biscuits. Are they baked BEFORE you make the recipe and then you use them in layering in the recipe or do you put the dough in unbaked?

    • Hi Patty! You place the biscuit dough in unbaked and then layer it with the remaining ingredients. Everything bakes at once.

  3. This was delicious!! I made it ahead on Christmas Eve and baked it Christmas morning. The flavor was wonderful! The only change I made to recipe was substituting 1/2 tsp of oregano because I didn’t have any parley.

    When I make this again, and I definitely will, I will only put half of the store- bought biscuit on the bottom of the casserole dish and half on the top. I put a full biscuit on the bottom, then tomatoes, cheese, egg mixture, then an entire biscuit, more egg mixture and more cheese- and it baked up WAY TOO MUCH! It was yummy, but very messy. 😁. If you have a very deep pan, go for it, but if you have a typical Pyrex dish, I would recommend only half a biscuit on top and bottom.
