This Chocolate Espresso Martini is like a delicious chocolatey fusion of my Espresso Martini Mocktail, inspired by my love for all things chocolate. It's the perfect blend of sweetness and that comforting toasty coffee aroma that hits just right.

This drink is basically a slightly fancy + chilled version of a delightful mocha. Now, I'm not big on alcohol and typically lean towards mocktails, but I made an exception here, choosing chocolate liqueur and a vodka alternative. Of course, you can go for regular vodka or even turn the whole thing into a mocktail so everyone can join in the fun!

You can totally switch things up and go caffeine-free with decaf coffee in this recipe too. It's a game-changer, making this chocolate espresso martini accessible to everyone, minus the buzz. And the best part? With just a few ingredients and a bit of shaking (my favorite part, Haha), it's ready to enjoy in just 10 minutes.

How To Make A Chocolate Espresso Martini

The first step is to make your freshly brewed espresso or coffee (I'm so obsessed with my Breville machine these days) and let everything cool completely for a nice smooth taste.

Then it's as simple as combining all the martini ingredients in a cocktail shaker, including the ice. Shake it up vigorously until everything's mixed + frothy. Then go ahead and pour your espresso martini into your favorite cocktail or martini glass using a strainer. If you like, top it off with three whole coffee beans or some shaved chocolate. Feel free to get creative with your favorite garnishes!

Ingredients

MARTINI:

TOPPINGS:

  • Shaved chocolate. I like to use premium chocolate like Hu for the best flavor. Alternatively, learn how to make your own Oat Milk Chocolate Bars.
  • Espresso beans. This adds a nice touch as a topping.

Ingredients for Alcohol-Free Kahlua Substitute

If you're aiming for that similar flavor without alcohol, making your own Kahlua substitute in place of the chocolate baileys is a breeze. With just 4 ingredients (plus water), you can whip it up easily.

  • Brown sugar. For sweetness.
  • Instant coffee. Espresso powder also works.
  • Condensed milk. For this recipe, I used dairy-free condensed milk by Let's Do....Organic. Such a nice creamy substitute.
  • Chocolate extract. For that chocolatey flavor.

If you're feeling extra fancy, you can always opt for some non-alcoholic Kahlua alternatives like the ones from Lyre's spirits. They do a fantastic job capturing the essence without the alcohol kick. But hey, making your own is a breeze too—totally up to you and your mood.

Garnishes + Serving Ideas For This Chocolate Espresso Martini Recipe

These chocolate espresso martinis are sure to be a show-stopper, therefore, understanding how to best spruce them up for a special occasion is important. Before serving, you can dress them up even more with festive toppings like:

  • Coffee beans – The timeless choice for a classic espresso martini.
  • Shaved chocolate. These add a dramatic touch and I love using my vegetable peeler for fancy chocolate shavings.
  • Cocoa powder – A light sprinkle atop the froth perfectly enhances the chocolate-y flavor.
  • Coconut whipped cream. You can use regular dairy whipped cream if you aren't concerned with it being dairy-free.
  • Cinnamon stick. A stick or two of cinnamon adds a nice kick of flavor and makes for a simple garnish.
  • Marshmallows. Toast a small marshmallow on a toothpick and place it on the rim of the glass for a playful touch.
  • Chocolate syrup. Drizzle chocolate sauce or syrup into the martini glasses before straining the cocktail for extra chocolate flavor and decoration.

Chocolate Espresso Martini Q + A's

Can I make more?

Definitely! To make additional martinis, simply double or triple ingredients, depending on need.

Can I use instant coffee instead of espresso?

While freshly brewed espresso is preferred for its rich flavor and texture, you can substitute it with a strong brew of instant coffee. However, the taste and texture may vary slightly.

Can I prepare a batch of Chocolate Espresso Martinis in advance?

While it's best to serve Chocolate Espresso Martinis freshly prepared, you can pre-mix the ingredients (excluding the espresso) and store them in a cocktail shaker in the refrigerator until ready to serve. When ready, add freshly brewed espresso, shake well, and strain into glasses.

How long should I chill the espresso before making a Chocolate Espresso Martini

It's ideal to chill the freshly brewed espresso in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before making the Chocolate Espresso Martini. Chilling the espresso helps to maintain the cold temperature of the cocktail and prevents it from being diluted when mixed with ice in the shaker. However, if you're short on time, you can cool the espresso more quickly by placing it in the freezer for about 15 minutes.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Serves: 1 serving

Ingredients

MARTINI:

  • 2 shots freshly-brewed espresso, cooled
  • 2-4 oz. chocolate bar, premium
  • 2 ounces vodka or vodka alternative (I like to us Ritual Zero Proof Vodka Alternative)
  • 2 ounces Bailey's Chocolate Liqueur (See Post for Kahlua substitute for alcohol-free option)
  • Crushed ice

TOPPINGS:

  • Shaved chocolate, premium
  • 3 Espresso beans

Instructions

BREW THE CHOCOLATE-INFUSED ESPRESSO:

  • Using your favorite espresso machine, add the chocolate bar to a glass and brew the espresso coffee atop the chocolate. NOTE: As the chocolate sits in the hot coffee, it should melt mostly or entirely. Let it cool.

TO MAKE THE MARTINI:

  • Add all of the martini ingredients together in a cocktail shaker (including the ice), shaking vigorously until combined and foamy.
  • Assemble the martini: Using a cocktail (or regular) strainer, strain the espresso martini into your favorite cocktail or martini glass and top with 3 whole coffee beans and/or shaved chocolate, if desired. NOTE: You can also top your martini with your fave garnish ideas!
  • Sip and Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • SERVING: To make additional martinis, simply double or triple ingredients, depending on need.
  • KAHLUA: Kahlúa coffee liqueur is one of the main ingredients in many of the world's favorite cocktails including the espresso martini. For this recipe, I chose to use Bailey's, however, you can use actual Kahlúa. Therefore, to make this recipe non-alcoholic----I created a great simple syrup substitute.
