Why Cucumber + Ginger + Lemon Together?

Well, the short answer is that each ingredient has a ton of health benefits, therefore, putting them together adds more power! I delve further into their individual benefits throughout this post, but that's really my main reason for adding them together for this detox.

What is a Detox?

By dictionary definition, Detox is the psychological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the human body. Therefore, detoxes like this one helps your body to reset and get rid of toxins (which can be built up by many factors internally and externally) so that we can feel rejuvenated, improve our health, and help with weight loss

Other Great Ways to Detox.

Despite the misconception, there are many ways to detox your whole body which don't always require making your own recipe of drinks and teas.

When it comes to natural home remedies, we often think that taking little steps won’t eventually bring us to the major milestones that we hope for. However, truth is–every big milestone occurs after several mini steps. Therefore, 3 Detoxes That You Should Be Doing More Often discusses some of the mini steps that you can take to ensure that your goal to ‘complete wellness’ happens before the year ends.

Why Add Thyme? Is There a Benefit?

Although thyme is a common garden herb, many people don't understand the overall health benefits of using it in recipes such as a drink like this one. Thyme run in the mint family and acts as a great anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant agent

Therefore, adding this herb to other beneficial ingredients will only create a greater powerhouse effect!

What's the Deal with Cucumbers?

Before we dig into this recipe, did you know that Cucumber is an actual fruit and not vegetable? I know.

It's pretty crazy how we think of all fruit being sweet or at least a little sweet in the midst of any tartness. However, a cucumber just don't fit either category right? Is it just me? Haha.

But yes---cucumber is a fruit and it has some pretty awesome benefits as well:

  • It's high in nutrients, containing Fiber, Protein, Vitamins C + K, Magnesium, and more (all with the skin + unpeeled).
  • Has great antioxidants---flushes out toxins and all!
  • Promotes hydration and can help meet your daily fluid needs---they're made up of 96% water!
  • They can help aid in weight loss.
  • May lower blood sugar levels.
  • Great for digestion!
  • Supplies skin friendly minerals.
  • Revives the eyes---think spa day and cucumber slices on your eyes to reduce puffiness and under-eye bags.
  • Refreshes the mouth and heals diseased gums.
  • Keeps kidneys healthy!
  • Makes hair and nails stronger.

And the list goes on.

Let's face it---cucumbers are more than just that one ingredient that you throw on top of a salad to add character! It's healthy stuff!

5 SURPRISING BENEFITS OF LEMON + GINGER TOGETHER:

  • Improves Cognitive Function:

Yes, I know. I wasn’t aware of this either, however, lemon and ginger combined does wonders to our brains. Overall, they are great at soothing specific nerves and improving our mood. As a result, it allows us to think more clearly, and the antioxidant properties eliminates oxidative stress and helps to lower our chances of Alzheimers and dementia.

  • Improves Skin Care:

When it comes to antioxidants and certain vitamins, we know that this obviously helps with skincare. However, when it comes to lemon and ginger combined, specifically, you are able to drink them together to improve your skin health or apply them topically to your irritated skin for healing. Also, because of their antibacterial and antiviral properties, you can use both ingredients to prevent any infection of the skin.

  • Helps with the Health of your Hair:

While each ingredient has been used individually to help your overall hair health, combining them actually boosts your vitamin A and C, which helps to promote hair growth. They both also help to reduce dry skin and dandruff naturally, so this is a great alternative to using specific products that may be overall harmful and not entirely natural.

  • Helps to Relieve Pain:

When it comes to ginger specifically, which has it’s anti-inflammatory properties, it can also act as an pain reliever and helps your body recover from body pain, menstrual cramps, surgeries, and other illnesses. So the next time you find yourself contemplating on whether to take another pain killer, try using ginger (tea specifically) as a natural home remedy.

  • Controls Diabetes:

Ginger specifically, have been linked to keeping your blood sugar levels at bay, which is good for anyone who suffers from Diabetes. However, research shows that lemon also plays a great role in helping to control Diabetes as well. The soluble fiber and Vitamin C in lemon helps to reduce your blood sugar levels, as well as blood pressure and cholesterol.

So, not only does Ginger and Lemon taste amazing together, but they also have some pretty awesome health benefits as well. Who knew?

When it comes to this Cucumber Ginger Lemon Detox Juice, it’s all about the spicy ginger and mint flavors paired with the bit of tartness from the lemon, green apple and freshness of the cucumber and thyme. Great as a detox or a boost in digestion, overall, this recipe is completely natural, easy to make, and perfect for any day or season.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
Serves: 4 servings

Ingredients

JUICE:

  • 5-6 cups fresh water
  • 2 large cucumbers, peeled + diced
  • 1-2 ounces ginger roots, peeled + roughly chopped (I recommend starting with 1 ounce and then increasing based on preference)
  • juice of lemon (That's about 2 Tbsps!)
  • 1 medium Granny smith apple, skin on + sliced
  • handful fresh mint leaves, rinsed
  • 1-2 fresh thyme leaves, rinsed
  • ½ cup Agave

Instructions

TO MAKE THE GINGER-MINT SYRUP:

  • In a medium pot over medium-high heat, add water and let it begin to boil. Once boiling, add chopped ginger, mint leaves, + thyme leaves and boil for 5 minutes before reducing the heat to the lowest setting and letting it simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and cover the pot to let everything cool + steep for 20-25 minutes.

BLEND EVERYTHING TOGETHER:

  • Next, add cooled mixture (leaves + chopped roots included) to a high-powered blender along with diced cucumbers + apple and blend on medium-high speed until smooth and 'foamy', about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add in juice of a lemon and Agave and blend for another 15-20 seconds.
  • Once done, slowly pour + strain juice into a pitcher, squeezing the pulp against the strainer to ensure that all juices are extracted. NOTE: If preferred, you can skip this step and leave pulp in.
  • To serve---add drink to prepared glass(es) and garnish, if desired. NOTE: If preferred, you can let the juice chill in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours before serving as well.
  • Sip and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • STORAGE: Leftovers can be stored tightly sealed in a pitcher with plastic wrap over it or in a sealed mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Be sure to stir before serving.
  • ADDITIONAL BOOST: To add a boost to make this drink more powerful, you can add cayenne pepper, turmeric/black pepper, or apple cider vinegar to the mix (1 teaspoon of either)!
  • SWEETNESS: Add more maple syrup or Agave for more sweetness if needed, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  • HEALTH BENEFITS: To see the health benefits of each ingredient, see the ENTIRE POST.

  1. I must have used too muchmg ginger. I used 3 stalks. I can't drink sll this in 2 days. Is it ok to freeze some?

    • Hi Susan! So sorry to hear that---I'd recommend starting at about 1 ounce of ginger root and increasing depending on liking. Also, I'm not sure if it does well frozen, however, you can store it tightly sealed for 2-3 days. 🙂

  2. Love this Cucumber Ginger Lemon Detox Juice, this seems amazing and unique. Super excited to try this one, thanks for sharing this one with us.

  3. Hi! Is there a reason for boiling the ginger , mint and thyme leaves ? Isn’t it better to blend it fresh? Thank you!

    • Hi Juniette, It's definitely a preference! I like boiling them so that the steeped flavors are added to the drink as well as the leaves and ginger root gets softened. If you'd prefer to blend them without boiling, please feel free! 🙂

  4. Didn't have mint leaves, substituted it with mint sweets. So refreshing, thank you💃💃 can't wait to try one of your other recipes

    • Hi! I'm so happy to hear that you loved this recipe! It's definitely one of my go-to's! Thanks so much for choosing to try it! Always feel free to reach out if you have any questions about another recipe! 🙂

  5. This has become a weekly staple now. The one small change I made was not adding agave. Thanks for responding with the clarification on the boiling process. 🙂

    • Hi Sheila! Absolutely! I'm so glad to hear that you've been loving this! It's definitely a great addition to any weekly routine! 🙂

  6. “boil for 10-15 minutes before reducing the heat to the lowest setting and letting it simmer after the first 5 minutes”? To clarify - boil for 15 and then reduce and simmer for an additional 5 minutes?

    • Hi Sheila! So sorry for the confusion! You should boil it for the first 5 minutes and then reducing the heat so that it simmers for the remaining 10 minutes. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on how everything turned out! 🙂

  7. I am into juice business. Is it possible to make the juice and store in refrigerator for a week? Thanks.

    • Hi! Personally, I never store it in the fridge for more than 2 days since everything tends to settle at the bottom after awhile due to the ingredients! Therefore, I recommend making batches every 2-3 days! 🙂

    • There is no specific timeframe to drink this, however, I usually drink it in 3-4 day increments with rest periods. 🙂

  8. Well isn’t this a refreshing drink?! I’m enjoying this after a hard workout. I love the bright flavors!

    • Hi Coby! I'm so happy that you're enjoying this recipe! It's definitely perfect for post-workouts or regular detoxing! 🙂

  9. I have a problem i want to lose belly fat n a few KGS can you recommend a drink for me which can work faster.

    • Hi Maggie! Unfortunately, I don't specialize in weight loss! However, Detox drinks usually aide in that in some ways! 🙂

  10. Love it’s freshness !
How many glasses can I drink in a day?
How long can I keep it in the fridge?

    • Hi Thanam! I'm so glad that you enjoy this recipe! It's definitely a staple! When storing, I'd recommend keeping it for 1-2 days for optimal freshness. Also, I would drink just 1 glass a day.

  11. I made this refreshing drink so Devine I must say. I would like to know if there is a diet to go along with it or can I eat I normal no
    Lette

    • Hi Lette! I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed this one! It definitely is a fave in our house! I don't have a specific diet to go with this, however, I do have many Vegan options on our site! Of course, you can always eat normal, while keeping things healthier. 🙂

    • Hi Shelby,

Thanks so much for your feedback! It really depends on how much ginger flavor you'd like! A 1-inch piece of fresh ginger is the equivalent to 1 1/4 teaspoons of ground or 1 tablespoon crystallized ginger. Therefore, you can try using 3-4 inches of ginger to start and add additional depending on your taste. Hope this helps!

  12. I have to tell you I really enjoy visiting your blog, you have such an amazing combo of great recipes such as this detox drink, as I have grown a little older I have become more and more infatuated with delicious healthy recipes. I can't wait to try this. It looks so refreshing and healthy!

  16. I love how refreshing this drink sounds! And I learned something today - I can't believe cucumber is a fruit! I've made smoothies with cucumbers as well as cocktails but I love the sound of the combination of ginger and lemon to flavor the cucumber. This will be high on my list to try for a healthy pick-me-up.

  17. I love the flavors in this detox juice! Of all of the juices that I've tried, this one is by far my favorite!

  18. I love cucumber juice in beverages -- and I've found that if you leave the skin on when you blend it -- it turns a remarkably SHAMROCK shade of green. Gorgeous! I would strain the pulp like you suggest to make it more liquidy.

  19. This detox juice looks so refreshing and tasty. Love the combination with the ginger and the mint. Cannot wait to try this juice heading over to buy ingredients.
