Growing up, milkshakes were such a delicious treat that I often enjoyed. Honestly, I think that milkshake were probably the one thing that most kids could agree on regardless of the flavor---am I right? Even this Oreo Milkshake reminds me of the coveted McDonald's Oreo McFlurry, which was majorly popular! Now, as an adult, I really enjoy these decadent drinks from time to time, especially this Easy Peanut Butter Chunky Monkey Milkshake! Seriously, this recipe is the perfect sweet treat to make your entire family and the bold flavors are truly something special!

Plus, you can whip together this easy recipe in as little as 5 minutes once all ingredients are prepped and enjoy a few sips with dinner or after dinner for a great dessert option. Either way, everyone will be happy----I promise!

This milkshake has a few essential elements. First, the shake itself is made with two types of ice cream (I love Ben & Jerry's because they have a ton of options and finding a good chocolate-based and peanut butter infused ice cream was a breeze). However, for a vegan option, you can always find great flavor options similar to the ones used in this recipe by brands like So Delicious Dairy-Free and Van Leeuwen. Next, you'll enjoy the elements of almond milk, chopped walnuts, banana, and vanilla. Then, I top it off with whipped cream, chopped chocolate, walnuts, sliced bananas, and drizzle of peanut butter. Wallah.

Making a Milkshake at Home

While milkshakes seem fancy when they're from a creamery, they are so easy to make yourself. All you need is a high-powered blender and some of your favorite ingredients.

All milkshakes begin with ice cream. You can make the ice cream yourself or use your favorite store-bought variety. Make sure to use a type of ice cream that you really enjoy, as it is the base for the milkshake. Check out my no-churn vanilla ice cream recipe.

Next, you'll need to decide on flavorings. If you want additional elements, add them here. You can add chocolate, vanilla extract, fruit, candy, flavored syrups, or anything else you enjoy---depending on the recipe.

The ingredients for this creamy Easy Peanut Butter Chunky Monkey Milkshake are simple and easy to find. Here’s what you need:

  • Chocolate-based ice cream. I love premium ice cream like Ben & Jerry's, Van Leeuwen’s or Haagen Daazs. For a vegan option, the best is So Delicious Dairy-Free.
  • Peanut Butter-infused ice cream. Again, I love premium ice cream like Ben & Jerry's, Van Leeuwen’s or Haagen Daazs. For a vegan option, the best is So Delicious Dairy-Free.
  • Almond milk. You can use any kind of regular dairy or dairy-free milk you like for this milkshake.
  • Vanilla extract. Use a dash of pure vanilla to optimize the flavor.
  • Nutmeg. For a dose of warmth that works great with the banana flavor.
  • Bananas. You’ll want to use really ripe bananas for the densest, sweetest flavor.
  • Walnuts. This adds a nice crunch as a garnish as well as a nuttier flavor which is the baseline of the "Chunkey Monkey Flavor".
  • Whipped cream. For a nice smoothness after every sip, I like to top with whipped cream. Make your own or use a store-bought version. For a vegan option, sub with coconut whipped cream.
  • Chocolate. I like to use premium chocolate bars like Ghirardelli and chop them up, however, you can use chocolate chips as well. For a vegan option, I love Hu Kitchen.
  • Peanut butter. Use organic, smooth peanut butter for this milkshake. This also works as a vegan option.

How to Make This Milkshake without a Blender

If for any reason you aren't able to use a blender, you can still enjoy this delicious Peanut Butter Chunky Monkey Milkshake. Instead, you can use a hand-mixer and have a perfectly whipped milkshake on hand.

To start, simply crush the walnuts and mash the banana a bit and add them in a deep bowl with the milk. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes so that they soften a bit. Next, using an electric hand-mixer, whip on low-speed until walnuts and banana are blended in. Then add softened ice creams, vanilla, and nutmeg and whip again until smooth and combined.

I know. Traditional milkshakes are made with ice cream as the base, however, I totally understand if you don't (or can't) use ice cream. No worries at all---you can still enjoy this Peanut Butter Chunky Monkey Milkshake without ice cream and here's what you'll need:

  • 2 cups Almond milk (or your fave plant-based milk)
  • 1 cup cold heavy cream, organic (Sub with full-fat coconut cream for vegan option)
  • ½ cup organic peanut butter
  • ½ cup chopped chocolate (Sub with vegan chocolate for vegan option)
  • 2 tsps vanilla extract
  • 1 cup organic powdered sugar
  • 2-3 cups ice cubes

Just like the recipe for this Peanut Butter Chunky Monkey Milkshake, you'll add all of these ingredients along with the normal amount of banana, walnuts, and nutmeg to a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Wallah!

Ingredients

MILKSHAKE:

  • 2 cups Chocolate or chocolate chip ice cream, premium (I love Ben & Jerry's)
  • 1 cup Peanut Butter ice cream (I use Ben & Jerry's Netflix & Chill flavor)
  • 1 cup Almond milk (You can use regular milk or your fave plant-based milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 very ripe banana, sliced
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg

TOPPINGS:

  • Whipped cream
  • Sliced bananas
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Chopped chocolate
  • Peanut butter, softened + drizzled

Instructions

TO MAKE THE MILKSHAKE:

  • Add both ice creams, milk, vanilla, banana, walnuts, and nutmeg to a high-powered blender and blend on medium-high speed, until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. 
  • Once milkshake consistency is met, pour milkshake into tall glass(es), and top each milkshake with whipped cream, sliced bananas, walnuts, chopped chocolate, and drizzle of peanut butter, if desired.
  • Add a straw and sip away and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

HOMEMADE WHIPPED CREAM: In the bowl of an electric mixer on medium-high speed, whip the COLD heavy cream (2-3 cups), using the whisk attachment for 4-5 minutes, until fluffy peaks begin to form. **NOTE: When it begins to thicken after the first 2-3 minutes, gradually add in 1 tablespoon vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt.** Once fully fluffy, remove from mixer bowl and continue recipe. 
VEGAN OPTION: To make this milkshake recipe vegan, simply ensure that your ice creams are dairy-free. Also, make sure that you use plant-based milk, vegan chocolate, and coconut whipped cream.
