Ingredients For Homemade Whipped Cream

It’s super easy—just three ingredients! I went with vanilla for this batch, but you can totally switch things up with other extracts to make it your own.

WHIPPED CREAM:

  • Heavy cream. I love using organic wherever possible for the best quality. Make sure it's VERY COLD!
  • Powdered sugar. Again I chose organic but you can use whatever you have on hand.
  • Vanilla extract. Use pure vanilla extract for the best vanilla flavor.

How To Make Homemade Whipped Cream

Make sure your cream is SUPER COLD straight from the fridge, and have your mixing bowl and either an electric stand mixer or a hand mixer ready to go!

  • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer on medium-high speed, whip together the heavy cream and powdered sugar (using the whisk attachment for 4-5 minutes) until fluffy peaks begin to form. NOTE: When it begins to thicken after the first 2-3 minutes, gradually add in the vanilla extract.
  • Once fully fluffy, remove from mixer bowl and store in an airtight container and refrigerate to keep chilled.

Homemade Whipped Cream vs Store Brought

Homemade whipped cream is a game changer when it comes to taste + texture. It’s super fresh, made with just heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract, and you can tweak the flavors to your liking. The result is a light, fluffy cream that’s perfect for topping desserts and adding a special touch.

Store-bought whipped cream is convenient and has a longer shelf life, but it often comes with preservatives + artificial flavors. While it’s easy to grab from the fridge, it can’t quite match the rich, creamy goodness of homemade.

Can Homemade Whipped Cream Replace Cool Whip?

Definitely! Homemade whipped cream can replace Cool Whip in recipes! It has a fresher taste + richer texture, making it a great alternative. Just keep in mind that it doesn't have the same shelf stability as Cool Whip.

How To Best Store?

It can be stored in the refrigerator for 5–7 days if kept in an airtight container or piping bag in the coldest part of the fridge, away from the door.

If it softens, you can re-whip it with a bit of powdered sugar or cold cream. To keep whipped cream from collapsing and spoiling, avoid removing it from the fridge to use just some of it.

Homemade Whipped Cream Q + A's

How to Fix Over-Whipped Cream?

If your cream is over-whipped and grainy, gently fold in a bit of unwhipped cream or milk to smooth it out. Mix carefully to avoid over-whipping again. If it’s separated into butter and buttermilk, use the butter for baking and the buttermilk in recipes.

Why isn’t my whipped cream thickening?

If your whipped cream isn’t thickening, it might be because the cream isn’t cold enough, wasn’t whipped long enough, or isn’t high-fat. Ensure your cream is well-chilled and whip it thoroughly.

Can I Pipe This With Piping Tips?

Absolutely! Just make sure it’s well-whipped and firm enough to hold its shape. For best results, use a chilled piping bag and tips to keep the cream from softening as you work.
